Hotels in New York

New York is a city of neighbourhoods linked by a subway that runs day and night. Most visitors stay in Manhattan, near the sights; Brooklyn, across the East River, is quieter and often better value. Choose where you want to spend your evenings, then check the nearest subway lines.

This guide helps you choose an area. Hotel prices and availability are checked when you search with dates and guests.

Getting in from the airport

JFK, Newark (EWR) and LaGuardia (LGA)

From JFK, the AirTrain connects to the subway and the Long Island Rail Road at Jamaica, and to the subway at Howard Beach. From Newark, in New Jersey, the AirTrain connects to NJ Transit and Amtrak trains to Penn Station. LaGuardia is linked by buses to the subway. Taxis wait at every terminal; check which airport your flight uses.

Getting around the city

The subway runs around the clock and reaches every borough; tap a contactless card or phone at the gate to pay, on the buses too. Manhattan’s numbered streets make walking simple. Yellow cabs can be hailed when their roof light is on, and ride-hailing apps work everywhere.

When to go

  • Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are mild and the most comfortable for walking, and autumn is the busiest season.
  • Summer is hot and humid.
  • Winter is cold and sometimes snowy, with holiday lights and shop windows from late November to the New Year — the weeks around Thanksgiving and the New Year are among the busiest.

Before choosing your address

  • Rooms in Manhattan are often compact. Read the room size and the bed type in the room description.
  • Many hotels add a daily fee, often called a resort or destination fee, paid at the hotel. Read the rate terms and the fees collected at the property.
  • Check the nearest subway station and whether its lines run express to the places you plan to visit.
