Hotels in Marrakech

Marrakech has two faces: the medina, a maze of souks and riads around Jemaa el-Fna square, and the newer districts outside the walls, with avenues, gardens and resort hotels. A riad puts you in the heart of the old city; a hotel outside it gives you space, a pool and a car to the door.

This guide helps you choose an area. Hotel prices and availability are checked when you search with dates and guests.

Get to know the area before choosing a hotel

Which area suits your trip

A first visit
A riad in the medina, close to Jemaa el-Fna, to wake inside the old city.
Families
Hivernage or the Palmeraie, with pools, gardens and a car to the door. A riad with small children means narrow lanes and stairs.
Couples
A riad with a roof terrace in the medina or the Kasbah.
Rest by the pool
The Palmeraie and the resorts on the edge of the city.
Going out
Hivernage and Gueliz.

Getting in from the airport

Marrakech Menara (RAK)

The airport is close to the city. Taxis wait outside the terminal, an airport bus runs to Jemaa el-Fna and Gueliz, and many riads and hotels arrange a pick-up. Cars cannot enter most of the medina, so a driver usually stops at the nearest point and someone walks you to the door. Agree a taxi fare before you set off.

Getting around the city

The medina is walked: its lanes are narrow, many are closed to cars, and motorbikes and carts share them with you. Outside the walls, petit taxis are the usual way around — agree the fare or ask for the meter before you set off. Horse-drawn calèches wait near Jemaa el-Fna.

When to go

  • Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are warm and sunny, the most pleasant time to visit.
  • Summer is very hot, and the medina is best explored early and late in the day.
  • Winter days are mild and sunny, but the nights are cold — a riad’s heating matters — and the Atlas Mountains are often capped with snow.

Before choosing your address

  • Booking a riad? Ask how to reach it from the nearest point a car can stop, and whether someone will meet you there.
  • Riad rooms open onto the courtyard, can be small, and sound carries around the house. Read the room description, and ask about a room by the roof terrace.
  • A tourist tax is charged per person per night, usually at the hotel. Read the rate terms.

Questions before you book

Should I stay in a riad or a hotel in Marrakech?

A riad, a guesthouse around a courtyard in the medina, for atmosphere and the old city on foot; a hotel in Hivernage or the Palmeraie for space, a pool and a car to the door.

Where should I stay in Marrakech for a first visit?

Inside the medina, within a walk of Jemaa el-Fna, or in the Kasbah, a little calmer. Ask how to reach the riad from the nearest point a car can stop.

How far is Marrakech airport from the medina?

Close. Taxis and an airport bus run to Jemaa el-Fna, and many riads arrange a pick-up. Agree a taxi fare before you set off.

Is Marrakech good for families?

Yes, with planning: hotels in Hivernage and the Palmeraie have pools and gardens, while the medina means narrow lanes, stairs and busy souks.

When is the best time to visit Marrakech?

Spring and autumn, when the days are warm and sunny. Summer is very hot, and winter nights are cold.
