Checked bags on a flight: why a bag is a different fare, not an extra
The cheapest fare on a flight and the one you actually need are often the same seat on the same aircraft. What separates them is usually the bag.

Three kinds of bag
Airlines count luggage in three kinds, and a fare can include any mix of them:
- Personal item — a small bag that fits under the seat in front of you, such as a handbag or a laptop bag.
- Cabin bag — a small suitcase or backpack for the overhead locker, within the airline's size and weight limits.
- Checked bag — a suitcase handed in at the airport and collected at the other end.
The limits for each are the airline's, not a standard, and they can differ between two airlines on the same route. The allowance printed on a fare is the one that holds for that ticket.
A bag belongs to the fare, not to the flight
The same flight is usually sold at several prices. The aircraft, the seats and the times are identical; what changes between the fares is what comes with the ticket: the bags, whether it can be changed, and whether any of it is refunded.
So the question is rarely "how much is a bag on this flight?" It is "which fare on this flight includes the bag I need, and what does it cost against the cheapest one?" That difference is the real price of the bag.
On Rahlio a flight's fares sit together on one sheet, and a bag is bought by choosing the fare that includes it. The supplier we sell flights through offers no way to attach a bag to a cheaper fare afterwards, so we do not pretend to.
Reading the airline's price list
Next to a fare you may also see the airline's own prices for extra bags. Three things are worth knowing about that list:
- It is the airline's. It is shown so you can compare, and named as the airline's. It is not part of what you pay when you book.
- It is per traveller. A fare's price is for everyone on the booking; a bag on the airline's list is for one person.
- It is not always in order of weight. A 32 kg bag can cost less than a 20 kg one on the same fare. Read each weight with its own price, and never assume the lightest option is the cheapest.
When the allowance is not stated
Sometimes a supplier does not say what a fare includes. That is not the same as "no bag", and it is not the same as "bag included". We show it as not stated and leave it there, because guessing would be worse than saying nothing.
If it matters for your trip — and a checked bag usually does — look up the airline's baggage rules for your route and fare name before you book.
Before you go to the airport
- Check the allowance on your confirmation: that is the one your ticket carries.
- Weigh the bag at home. Excess weight is charged at the desk, often at a higher price than a bag bought in advance.
- On a journey with more than one airline, read each airline's limits. The strictest one is the one your bag has to meet.
- Seats are a separate matter: they are chosen with the airline after the ticket is issued, not at booking.
Questions that keep coming up
Does "baggage allowance was not stated" mean there is no bag?
No. It means the supplier did not say either way. Check the airline's own baggage page for your flight and fare before you travel, rather than assuming either answer.
Can I add a checked bag after I have booked?
Not through Rahlio. Most airlines sell extra bags on their own manage-booking pages after the ticket is issued, at their own prices and on their own terms.
Is the bag price shown per person or for everyone?
The airline's price list for extra bags is per traveller. The fare's total is for everyone travelling, which is why the two are never added together on the page.
Why is a heavier bag sometimes cheaper than a lighter one?
Airlines price bags by their own rules — by route, by fare family, by how the bag is bought — and the list is not always in order of weight. Read the weight and its price together, one line at a time.
