Free cancellation: how to read the terms before you book
Most people will not book a hotel they cannot get out of. That line is on every booking, and it is worth knowing how to read it.

What free cancellation is, and is not
Free cancellation is a promise with a date on it: until a certain moment you can cancel at no cost, and after it you cannot. It belongs to the rate you chose rather than to the hotel. The same room in the same hotel is often sold both ways, at two prices.
So free cancellation without its date is half the information. The date is what decides whether the booking is still flexible next week or only today.
Where the deadline hides
The deadline sits in the rate conditions and usually carries a time as well. That time is the hotel's, not your phone's — an hour between Tel Aviv and Rome is the difference between cancelling in time and being charged.
- Look for a date and a time, not just the word cancellation.
- Check which time zone the hour is counted in.
- Keep the confirmation: the terms shown when you booked are the ones that hold.
Flexible versus non-refundable
A non-refundable rate is almost always cheaper, and fairly so: you are carrying the risk the hotel would otherwise carry. The only question is what the difference is worth to you.
A rule of thumb: if the dates are certain and the rest of the trip is paid for, the saving may be worth it. If a flight is still unbooked, children are travelling, or a meeting could move, the difference is cheap insurance.
What happens when you cancel
The money returns the way it was paid, to the same card. When the hotel or the supplier took the payment, the refund comes from them, so the timing depends on the card issuer too and not only on whoever cancelled.
Cancelling inside the free window returns everything that was paid. Cancelling after it is charged according to the terms: sometimes one night, sometimes the whole stay.
No-shows and date changes
Not turning up without cancelling is the most expensive case there is, and is usually charged in full, even when the booking could have been cancelled free the day before. If you know you will not arrive, cancelling beats silence.
Changing dates is not always cancelling: some rates let a stay move with no penalty, while others treat a change as a cancellation plus a fresh booking at today's price. Ask before you cancel.
